Meet Max Wellman

Age: 17

Wunderkind: Jazz vocalist Max Wellman is quickly becoming a local sensation. Performing with the poise and confidence of someone far beyond his years, he captivates audiences with a classic yet fresh vocal style that engagingly expresses the music's rhythms and emotions.

Why jazz?:

"Some people think jazz isn't relevant because it's attached to another era, but there's something timeless about it," says Wellman. "It has substance."

Mentors:

"The coolest thing about my whole experience is how helpful local jazz musicians have been," says Wellman. His band mate Roxi Copland especially has been key to his growing career, he says. "If it weren't for Roxi, I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now."

On stage:

Wellman leads combo bands that perform regularly at area venues, including The Grand Piano Bistro, Black Cat Caf, and Vaudeville Mews, as well as at private parties. More information: www.myspace.com/maxwellman.
